Non-native transition metal monoxide nanostructures: unique physicochemical properties and phase transformations of CoO, MnO and ZnO

چکیده
The discovery of unprecedented, non-native phases of transition metal oxides is a fascinating theme in materials chemistry, including the development of new synthetic strategies with excellent sizeand phase-selectivity, and elucidation of their unique physicochemical properties. Most of the first-row transition metal monoxides, such as MnO, FeO, CoO and NiO, are known to exist in a cubic phase, but only ZnO adopts a hexagonal structure. This review summarizes recent results on the syntheses and characterization of the non-native phases of h-CoO, h-MnO and c-ZnO transition metal monoxides, compared to their native phases. The investigation of the sizeand phase-selective synthetic methods, formation mechanism and unique physicochemical properties of non-native transition metal monoxides would have an enormous impact on materials chemistry and open a promising avenue for magnetic, electronic and spintronic applications. A systematic study of neutral and charged 3d-metal trioxides and tetraoxides.
Using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation, we have performed a systematic study of the structure and properties of neutral and charged trioxides (MO(3)) and tetraoxides (MO(4)) of the 3d-metal atoms. The results of our calculations revealed a number of interesting features when moving along the 3d-metal series. (1) Geometrical configurations of the lowest total ene...
متن کاملWurtzite-type CoO nanocrystals in ultrathin ZnCoO films.
Surface x-ray diffraction experiments reveal that, in cobalt-doped ZnO films two to five monolayers thick, Wurtzite-type CoO nanocrystals are coherently embedded within a hexagonal boron-nitride- (h-BN)-type ZnO matrix, supporting the model of a phase separation. First-principles calculations confirm that, in contrast with ZnO, the formation of h-BN-type CoO is unfavorable in the ultrathin film...
